Emergency Care

Sometimes, orthodontic treatment can result in mouth injuries because of braces and other orthodontic appliances. These dental emergencies can arise unexpectedly and may cause discomfort or concern.

It’s important to recognize that braces-related emergencies generally fall into two categories, which helps in effectively addressing the issues.

Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances

If your orthodontic appliances break or become loose, such as bands, brackets, or wires, please call our office during regular patient hours for assistance. We prioritize scheduled patients, so we are unable to accommodate walk-in emergencies.

Here are some helpful tips for managing common issues until we can assist you:

  • Irritating Tie Wire: If a tie wire is bothering you, cover it with beeswax or gently tuck it under the archwire using a blunt object like a pencil eraser or Q-tip.

  • Loose Band or Bracket: A loose band or bracket can often be left in place until your appointment. Please contact Young Orthodontics during office hours to schedule a visit for reattachment, if necessary.

  • Broken or Poking Archwire: You might be able to bend a broken or poking archwire with a pencil eraser or trim it using nail clippers. If the issue persists, call our office during patient hours for assistance.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth

For direct injuries to your mouth or teeth—whether or not you are undergoing orthodontic treatment—follow these steps:

  1. Ice the Injured Area: Immediately apply ice to the affected area to reduce swelling.

  2. Contact Your Dentist: Reach out to your general dentist as soon as possible. An x-ray may be necessary to assess the extent of the injury.

  3. Evaluate the Injury:

    • If a tooth has been knocked out: Contact your dentist immediately.
    • If a tooth is displaced or fractured: It’s best to consult your dentist first, as we may not have the required materials or anesthesia for treatment.
  4. Post-Dentist Visit: If appliances are dislodged or displaced, we will help replace or adjust them after you’ve seen your dentist, based on your comfort level.
