Frequently Asked Questions
Do you charge for an initial visit?
No, as a courtesy to you and your family dentist, we provide an initial visit at no cost.
At what age do you start seeing patients?
The American Association of Orthodontics suggests that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. As a rule of thumb, we usually begin evaluating young patients once their 6-year molars have come in and their permanent front teeth start to appear.
Why do you evaluate patients so young?
Early evaluation allows us to observe and gather information more than to start treatment. Only a small percentage of this young group may need some form of intervention. At this time, we can address habits and medical issues and establish an observation schedule.
How long will the first visit take?
The initial appointment typically lasts between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the patient’s needs. It will involve a visual examination, x-rays, and comprehensive diagnostics, including photographs and an intraoral scan of the mouth to record the current condition.
Do you take patients transferring from out of town?
Yes, we welcome patients transferring from other cities. We treat them like new patients, gathering complete diagnostic records to understand their current status and propose treatment to continue their care.
Do you have any adult patients?
Yes, an increasing number of our patients are adults. According to the American Association of Orthodontics, 1 in 4 orthodontic patients are adults.
What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?
Orthodontists are trained general dentists who have undergone at least 2 or more years of full-time orthodontic training, earning a specialty certificate. Orthodontists limit their practice to straightening teeth and dentofacial orthopedics. Dentists generally take weekend courses to learn orthodontics, and they typically do not involve actual patient care.
Can I make all my appointments in the afternoon after school and late in the day?
We offer early and late appointments for most procedures. We do our best to accommodate your schedule and family needs.
Do you see patients for emergencies?
Yes, we provide emergency care. Our contact information is posted on the website. Please visit our emergency care page for more details.
Can we make payments?
Yes, we offer convenient payment plans, regardless of insurance coverage, allowing you to pay for orthodontic services over a period that usually aligns with your treatment plan.
How do you handle insurance?
If you have insurance that will be covering any portion of your orthodontic treatment, our office staff is always available to help you with insurance claims and paperwork. However, if there are any changes or termination in your coverage, you are still obligated to pay the agreed-upon fee.
Do you take American Express, Master Card, and/or Visa?
Yes, we accept all major credit and debit cards.
Do you charge interest?
No, we do not charge interest.
Do you give family discounts?
Yes, we offer special programs and fees for multiple patients from the same family.
Do retainers need to be worn after braces?
We recommend regular retainer wear, “nighttime for a lifetime.” Dr. Young will provide specific instructions for retainer use after treatment.
Why do teeth get crooked after wearing braces or aligners?
Teeth naturally shift over time, so wearing a retainer indefinitely is advised to maintain orthodontic results throughout life.
